Names with the Same Abjad Value and Their Meanings

Picture two names side by side on a wedding invitation: Can and Gökçe. A friend who enjoys Abjad does the sums and is surprised: both names come to 54. "So they share one destiny," she says. Do they really? In this article we list names used in Turkey and across the Muslim world that share the same Abjad value, grouped by number, give their meanings, and look at what an equal number tells you and, more importantly, what it does not.

How do two different names reach the same number?

In Abjad numerology every letter has a numerical value, and a name's value is the sum of the letters in its Arabic spelling. Because it is a sum, the same total can be reached in many ways: 200 + 100 + 9 + 1 makes 310, and so does 200 + 70 + 40. That is why names with equal values are far more common than people expect.

The values in the tables follow the standard (kebir) Abjad system and the spellings in our site's name database. Conventions used: the article "al-" and the shadda are not counted, ة (ta marbuta) counts as 5, a standalone hamza (ء) has no value, and a hamza's seat letter counts as written. For names of Turkish origin (such as Erdem, Pınar, Ceren) the common Arabic-letter spelling was used.

One caution: if the spelling changes, the value changes. The name Sena written سناء ("radiance") totals 111, while ثناء ("praise") totals 551. When you calculate your own name, you need to know which spelling you are using.

Three kinds of equality

Look closely at the table and you will see that not all matches are alike. There are three different cases:

  1. Two pronunciations of one name. Tuba and Tuğba are really a single name; both are written طوبى and total 27. No surprising coincidence here.
  2. Same letters, different order. Selim (سليم), Melis (مليس) and Selma (سلمى) are made of the same four letters in a different sequence; all total 140. Murat (مراد) and Erdem (أردم) also share their letters and meet at 245. Enes (أنس) and Sena (سناء) carry the same three letters: 111.
  3. Completely different letters, same total. This is the most intriguing group. Ömer (عمر) and Tarık (طارق) meet at 310, yet they have almost no letters in common.

Let us open up that last example. In the classical classification used in the site's reports (some authors order the elements differently), every letter has an element:

  • Ömer: ع (70, Earth) + م (40, Fire) + ر (200, Earth). 270 of the 310 comes from Earth letters.
  • Tarık: ط (9, Fire) + ا (1, Fire) + ر (200, Earth) + ق (100, Water). 200 comes from Earth, 100 from Water and 10 from Fire letters.

Same number, two different textures of letters. In the Abjad tradition a name is never read by its total alone; the letters themselves, their order and their elements count too. Mehmet (محمد) and Pelin (بلين) are another case: both total 92, but Mehmet is built on Fire and Earth letters, while Pelin leans mostly on Air letters.

Same number, same fate? Myth and fact

Myth: "Two people whose names have the same Abjad value share the same character or destiny."

Fact: The tradition makes no such claim. The value is only one of the layers that can be read in a name. Beyond the letter order and elements, the star-reading calculation adds the mother's name to the person's own name. Two people with different mothers usually land on different signs, even when their names carry the same number.

A small example, with entirely hypothetical people:

  • An Ömer whose mother is named Ayşe (386): 310 + 386 = 696. The remainder of 696 divided by 12 is 0, so the star-reading sign is Pisces (Water).
  • A Tarık whose mother is named Fatma (135): 310 + 135 = 445. The remainder is 1, so the star-reading sign is Aries (Fire).

The names met in one number; the signs came from the Water and the Fire triplicity. In the Abjad tradition a number is a starting point, not a conclusion. Neither character nor destiny can be reduced to a number; the tradition treats these calculations as a tool for reflection and interpretation.

When a couple's names share a value

A fun detail stands out in the table: some groups contain both a girl's and a boy's name. Emre and Dilara (246), Eren and Merve (251), Onur and Ceren or Pınar (263), Selim and Melis or Selma (140), Enes and Sena (111), Mahmut and Nazlı (98), Levent and Melek (90), Ferhat and Meryem (290), Arif and Şeyma (351)…

If your name and your spouse's meet in the same number, it is a lovely coincidence to talk about. But the tradition has no rule saying "names of equal value make the most harmonious couple"; it is a point of curiosity, not a verdict. When looking at spousal harmony, what matters more than equal sums is each person's star calculated with the mother's name, the element balance of the letters and how the two sets of letters complement each other. Two people with equal name values may turn out to have harmonious stars or challenging ones; the number alone does not say.

A short checklist

  • Be clear about which Arabic spelling of the name you use; one letter changes the value.
  • Treat an equal value as a point of curiosity, not a verdict on character or fate.
  • When choosing a baby name, put meaning, sound and the picture formed with the parents' names first.
  • For spousal harmony, look beyond the number to the stars and elements found with the mothers' names.
