Twin Baby Names: Matching Pairs for Girls and Boys

Parents expecting twins face not one naming decision but two, and those two names will be spoken side by side for a lifetime: at school roll call, on birthday cards, on wedding invitations. So with twins the question is not only "Is this a beautiful name?" but also "Do these two names belong together?"

Below you will find 15 name pairs used in Turkey and across the Muslim world, grouped for girl-girl, boy-boy and girl-boy twins. Each table shows the Arabic/Ottoman spelling, the meanings, the Abjad value of each name and the sum of the pair. A few pairs hide small numerical surprises.

What Ties Two Names Together?

A pair of names usually feels "matched" because of one of three links:

  • Meaning: both names come from the same world, such as night and day, crescent and halo, or two words for the sea.
  • Sound: they start with the same letter or share a rhythm, like Sema and Sena or Yusuf and Yunus.
  • Root: both grow from the same Arabic root, like Selim and Selma (s-l-m, the root of safety and peace) or Emin and Emine (a-m-n, the root of trust).

The Abjad values were calculated by adding the classical values of the letters in each name's Arabic-script spelling. A final round ta (ة) counts as 5, and a standalone hamza (ء) counts as 0. Ottoman spellings of Turkish and Persian names vary between sources, so their values can vary too.

Yasemin & Reyhanياسمين · ريحانYasemin: jasmine, a fragrant white-flowered plant (Persian); Reyhan: basil; a sweet-smelling plant (Arabic)171 + 269440
Hilal & Haleهلال · هالةHilal: crescent, the new moon (Arabic); Hale: halo, the ring of light around the moon (Arabic)66 + 41107
Sema & Senaسماء · ثناءSema: sky, heaven (Arabic); Sena: praise (Arabic)101 + 551652
Leyla & Neharليلى · نهارLeyla: night (Arabic); Nehar: day, daytime (Arabic)80 + 256336
Damla & Yağmurدملا · ياغمورDamla: drop (of water) (Turkish); Yağmur: rain (Turkish, unisex)75 + 12571332

Most of these pairs are built on meaning. Leyla and Nehar place night and day side by side: two times that follow each other without ever replacing each other, a lovely image for twin sisters. Hilal and Hale are two parts of the same night sky: the thin crescent and the ring of light around the moon. Yasemin and Reyhan bring together two fragrant plants; the word reyhan also occurs in the Qur'an (Ar-Rahman 55:12). Damla and Yağmur is a purely Turkish pair, and because Yağmur is used for both girls and boys, it also works for boy-girl twins.

Hasan & Hüseyinحسن · حسينHasan: beautiful, good (Arabic); Hüseyin: "little Hasan", the little beautiful one (Arabic)118 + 128246
Kerem & Kerimكرم · كريمKerem: generosity, nobility (Arabic); Kerim: generous, noble (Arabic)260 + 270530
Yusuf & Yunusيوسف · يونسYusuf: Hebrew origin; usually explained as "he increases"; Yunus: Hebrew origin; "dove"156 + 126282
Mert & Yiğitمرد · يگيتMert: brave, a man of his word (Persian); Yiğit: young, brave, bold (Turkish)244 + 440684
Alp & Aslanالب · ارسلانAlp: valiant, hero (Turkish); Aslan: lion; Ottoman form arslan (Turkish)33 + 342375

Two details stand out here. The first is Alp and Aslan: their values are 33 and 342, which add up to 375. That is exactly the Abjad value of Alparslan (ألبارسلان), a well-known name from Turkish history. The reason is simple: Alparslan is written as these two words joined letter by letter. Name your twins Alp and Aslan, and in Abjad terms you have split one historic name between two brothers.

The second is Kerem and Kerim: two names from the same root separated by a single letter ya (ي), so their values differ by exactly 10 (260 and 270). The same is true of Hasan and Hüseyin: Hüseyin is the diminutive of Hasan, and the added ya raises the value from 118 to 128. These two are much loved as brothers' names because of Hasan and Husayn, the grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad; note, though, that the two brothers were not twins. Yusuf and Yunus are the names of two prophets named in the Qur'an, and each has a sura bearing his name.

Name Pairs for Boy-Girl Twins

PairSpellingMeaningsAbjadSum
Selma & Selimسلمى · سليمSelma: safe and sound, healthy (Arabic); Selim: sound, flawless, at peace (Arabic)140 + 140280
Emine & Eminأمينة · أمينEmine: trustworthy woman (Arabic); Emin: trustworthy (Arabic)106 + 101207
Melek & Melikملك · ملكMelek: angel (Arabic); Melik: king, ruler (Arabic)90 + 90180
Derya & Denizدريا · دنيزDerya: sea (Persian); Deniz: sea (Turkish, unisex)215 + 71286
Canan & Canجانان · جانCanan: beloved (Persian); Can: soul, life (Persian)105 + 54159

For boy-girl twins, a favourite approach is to choose two forms of the same root. Emin and Emine is the classic example; the only difference is the final round ta (ة), so the values are 101 and 106. Selma and Selim is more curious: they are spelled differently, yet both are worth 140.

Melek and Melik work the other way round. In Arabic script both are written with the same three letters, ملك, and only the vowel marks tell them apart. That is why they share the same value: 90. Two names with different sounds and meanings but one number is a neat reminder that Abjad counts letters, not pronunciation. Derya and Deniz carry the same meaning, "sea", in two languages, while Canan and Can are linked by the Persian word for "soul" and its derived meaning "beloved".

Myth or Fact? The Abjad Sum of Twin Names

Myth: "The bigger the sum of the two names, the more harmonious the twins." Fact: The sum is just a number. Mert and Yiğit add up to 684, Hilal and Hale to 107; the difference comes from the letters, not from the strength of the sibling bond.

Myth: "Names with identical values make the best pair." Fact: It is a pleasant coincidence that Selma and Selim, or Melek and Melik, share a value, but in the Abjad tradition a name is never read from one number alone. The elements of its letters and its relationship with the parents' names also count.

Myth: "These pairs are guaranteed to suit our family." Fact: These pairs match in meaning and sound. How they fit your family only becomes visible alongside the mother's and father's names; the same pair can look balanced in one family and quite different in another.

Why the Star Chart Is Interesting for Twins

In the Abjad tradition, the star chart (yıldızname) sign is found from the remainder when the Abjad total of a person's own name plus the mother's name is divided by 12. Twins share a mother, so the only thing that can give them different signs is their own names. This leads to a small but interesting result: names with the same value, such as Selma and Selim or Melek and Melik, always fall on the same sign, whoever the mother is. Names 10 apart, such as Kerem and Kerim or Hasan and Hüseyin, always fall on different signs. Which signs they are depends on the value of the mother's name.

Five Questions to Ask When Naming Twins

  1. When the names are said together, do they sound balanced, or does one overshadow the other?
  2. Do the meanings complete each other, or is it only a similarity of sound?
  3. If the names are very close (like Kerem and Kerim), will they cause mix-ups in daily life?
  4. Does each name have a beautiful meaning on its own? As children grow, they will mostly carry their names alone.
  5. What Abjad relationship does each name form with the parents' names?

You can answer the first four as a family. The fifth needs calculation and interpretation: each baby's name is compared with the mother's and father's names, an element map is drawn and the family balance is assessed. With twins, this is done twice, because two names joining the same family bring different letters and different elements with them. If you are curious how the pair you have in mind reflects on your family, you can have each name analysed separately and compare the results.

Note: The Abjad values and interpretations in this article are traditional knowledge; no claim is made that a name determines a child's future. The final choice of a name always belongs to the family.
