Earth Element Traits: Earth-Group Names in Abjad

Squeeze a handful of damp soil, then open your hand: the earth has taken the shape of your palm and it keeps it. Fire rises, air disperses, water runs off, but earth stays. That is what sets earth apart in the doctrine of the four elements: it is the element that keeps. It holds the seed, holds back the water, preserves the trace. This article looks at how the Abjad tradition describes earth, which letters belong to it, and why earth so often weighs more in a name than you would expect.

Cold and Dry: The Nature of Earth

In the theory of the four elements that passed from antiquity into Islamic thought (anâsır-ı erbaa in Ottoman Turkish), each element is defined by two qualities: fire is hot and dry, air hot and moist, water cold and moist, and earth cold and dry. Dryness stands for holding a shape, coldness for slowness and drawing inward. In classical cosmology earth is the heaviest element and sits at the centre of the world, at the bottom.

The meanings tradition gives to earth grow out of these two qualities: stability, continuity, accumulation, responsibility. Earth does not transform things at once. It receives first and makes them grow over time.

The Seven Earth Letters

In the Abjad tradition the 28 letters are assigned in turn, in Abjad order, to fire, air, water and earth, so each element receives seven letters. Under this classification, which our reports follow, the earth letters are (some authors use a different arrangement):

LetterNameAbjad value
دDal4
حḤa8
لLam30
عʿAyn70
رRa200
خKha600
غGhayn1000

There is a detail that is easy to miss. In this rotation earth is always the last link of each group of four, so the highest-valued letter of every quartet falls to earth, and the final letter of the alphabet, غ (1000), is an earth letter too. The seven earth letters add up to 1912, against 1135 for fire, 1358 for air and 1590 for water. The four elements have the same number of letters but not the same weight: about 32% of 5995, the total of all 28 letters, belongs to earth.

One Question, Two Answers: Letter Count or Value?

You can look at a name's element in two ways: how many of its letters belong to each element, or how much of its value comes from each element. Usually the two point the same way, but not always. Two names side by side:

Gamze (غمزة)Sedat (سداد)
Letters44
Earth letters1 (غ)2 (د, د)
Earth by letter count25%50%
Abjad total105269
Earth share by value95.1%11.6%
Leading element by valueEarthWater (87.0%)

In Gamze only one of the four letters is earth; by count earth holds a quarter, and the fire letters (م and the final ة) even outnumber it. But that single earth letter, غ, is worth 1000, so almost the whole total comes from earth. In Sedat half of the letters are earth, yet both are د (4), the lightest earth letter, and a single س worth 60 moves the name's centre of gravity to water.

The lesson is simple: "my name has many earth letters" and "my name is earth-heavy" are not the same statement. When you read any name analysis, knowing which measure is used is the first step to understanding the result.

The Earth Signs and Their Planets

The Yildizname tradition divides the twelve signs into four triplicities. The earth triplicity is Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, and each sign's ruling planet gives earth a different shade:

  • Taurus – Venus (Zühre): earth's power to gather meets harmony and taste; what is built should also be beautiful. Tradition calls Venus the lesser fortune (sa'd-ı asgar).
  • Virgo – Mercury (Utarid): described in tradition as mixed (mümtezic), a planet that takes on the colour of what accompanies it, Mercury adds order, detail and the gift of sorting things out.
  • Capricorn – Saturn (Zühal): called the greater malefic (nahs-ı ekber) in tradition, Saturn lends earth patience, discipline and endurance, and adds to its heaviness.

A reminder: the Yildizname sign does not come from your date of birth. It comes from dividing the Abjad total of your own name plus your mother's name by 12. A remainder of 2 gives Taurus, 6 gives Virgo, 10 gives Capricorn. So even if the letters of your name lean towards earth, the sign found with your mother's name may belong to a completely different element.

The Earth Temperament: Two Faces of Keeping

Tradition credits an earth-heavy nature with these strengths:

  • Keeping one's word: promises, trusts and responsibilities are earth's natural ground.
  • Patience: it knows how to wait for the harvest.
  • Concreteness: it trusts what is done more than what is planned.
  • Continuity: it finishes what it starts and protects what it builds.

Keeping is a virtue, but keeping everything is a burden. Earth's shadow side grows from the same quality:

  • Resistance to change: unease when the familiar order is broken, noticing opportunities late.
  • Not letting go: holding on to objects, grievances or outdated plans for too long.
  • Burying feelings: taking refuge in work and duty instead of saying what one feels.
  • Excessive caution: not moving until everything is guaranteed.

This is not a verdict on anyone's fate but the window through which tradition looks at a temperament. Two names with the same earth share can describe very different people, depending on their other letters and planets.

Earth with the Other Elements

  • Water + Earth – strong: water softens and nourishes earth, earth gives water a bed. Earth's holding power is at its most fruitful here.
  • Air + Earth – balanced: air brings new ideas and movement, earth makes them last. Handled well, the difference becomes complementary.
  • Fire + Earth – moderate: fire's speed can clash with earth's caution. Once a shared pace is found, fire warms earth and earth gives fire ground to stand on.
  • Earth + Earth – easy: values and pace match and agreement comes naturally. But two keepers together can also drift into stagnation; someone has to keep the door open.

Earth-Group Names

The list below was calculated by script from the Arabic spellings in our name database. The criterion: each name's Abjad total was split into four shares according to the elements of its letters; we selected names in which earth has the largest share of the four and ranked eight female and eight male names by their earth share. A final ة is counted as ه (5). Most are names common in Turkey.

Two things stand out. First, the spelling rule: in the Ottoman orthography our site follows, g/ğ in Turkish names with front vowels is written گ and counted like ك as 20 (a water letter), while ğ in names with back vowels is written غ (1000). That is why Uğur and Oğuz are tied to earth through غ, while Ezgi (أزگي, 38) drops out. In Gökhan the گ is worth only 20, but the title "han" is always written خان, and its خ (600) pulls the name back to earth: گوكخان, 697, with an earth share of 86.1%. Gamze, a word of Arabic origin, keeps its original غ. Second, Oğuz has only one earth letter out of five yet an earth share of 98.0%, while Ali and Ömer have two earth letters out of three. Every name takes its own road to earth.

Quick Questions

If my name is not on this list, am I not earth?

The list is only a sample. Your earth share can only be calculated from your own name's spelling. Also, the letter distribution of your name and the element of your Yildizname sign are not the same thing: one comes from your name alone, the other from your name together with your mother's.

Is a high earth share a good thing?

In tradition no element is good or bad on its own. Earth's strength lies in keeping; its test lies in letting go.

What the Table Cannot Show

The earth share is only one dimension of a name. In the Abjad tradition a personal reading deepens when the name is considered together with the mother's name: the Yildizname sign comes from that combined total, and the sign's element and ruling planet are set beside the distribution of the letters. If your name leans towards earth but your sign is an air sign, or the other way round, how those two layers meet in you cannot be read from a general table.

The information in this article is based on the Abjad and four-element tradition; it is not a definitive judgement, a prediction or health advice.
