2026 Modern Boys' Names from the Qur'an and Their Meanings
Look at the shortlists of families choosing a boy's name in 2026 and one trend stands out: short, two-syllable names that sit easily with a surname yet have their roots in the Qur'an. Names such as Eymen, Ensar, Fırat and Talha sound contemporary to today's ear and still find their meaning in a verse. In this article we present 25 boys' names used in Turkey and across the Muslim world, with their Arabic spelling, meaning, Qur'anic reference and Abjad value.
Because we cover the prophets' names and the people named in the Qur'an in separate articles, almost every name here is a word that occurs in the Qur'an: not someone's proper name, but an attribute, a concept or a place. The distinction matters: "a name from the Qur'an" does not always mean "someone in the Qur'an bears this name".
How to read this list
- Where in the Qur'an: we give one verse (sura:verse) in which the word occurs. Several words appear in other verses as well.
- Form in the verse: the word does not always appear in exactly the same form as the name. Zakir, Saim and Nasır occur in the plural, Kâmil in the feminine; this is noted in the meaning column.
- Abjad value: the sum of the letters of the name's usual Arabic/Ottoman spelling according to the standard Abjad table. A different spelling gives a different value.
1. Flowing names that begin with a vowel
Many names chosen often in recent years begin with a vowel and link smoothly to the surname. Eymen and Ensar are the best-known examples of this group. In Turkey Ebrar is given to both boys and girls.
| Name | Arabic spelling | Abjad | Meaning | Where in the Qur'an |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eymen | أيمن | 101 | Right side; blessed, auspicious (root yumn). In the verse: the "right side" of Mount Sinai | 19:52 |
| Ensar | أنصار | 342 | Helpers; the Muslims of Medina who welcomed the Prophet | 9:100 |
| Ebrar | أبرار | 404 | The righteous, the virtuous (plural of barr); also used for girls | 82:13 |
| Ufuk | أفق | 181 | Horizon; in the verse "the highest horizon" | 53:7 |
| Asım | عاصم | 201 | Protector, one who guards and shelters | 11:43 |
| Ali | علي | 110 | High, exalted; in the verse the "high station" to which Idris was raised | 19:57 |
A small but curious detail: Eymen (أيمن) and Emin (أمين) are made of the same four letters in a different order, and both have an Abjad value of 101. Same number, different meanings: one is "blessed, on the right", the other "trustworthy".
2. Short names from nature and light
The names in this group recall a hill, a stream, a tree, the moon and the light of the sun. Today Fırat is mostly associated with the river Euphrates, yet in the Qur'an the word "furat" simply means "sweet, fresh water". Bedir means the full moon and is also Badr, the place named in Sura Al Imran.
| Name | Arabic spelling | Abjad | Meaning | Where in the Qur'an |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safa | صفا | 171 | Purity, clarity; also the hill of Safa near the Kaaba | 2:158 |
| Ziya | ضيا | 811 | Light, radiance; the verse says the sun was made a "radiance" | 10:5 |
| Fırat | فرات | 681 | Sweet, fresh water; also the name of the Euphrates | 25:53 |
| Bedir | بدر | 206 | Full moon; also Badr, a place named in the Qur'an | 3:123 |
| Talha | طلحة | 52 | A talh tree; in the verse the "talh" of Paradise (explained by exegetes as banana or a kind of acacia) | 56:29 |
3. Names on the fa'il pattern: "the one who does"
In Arabic the fa'il pattern describes the person who performs an action: Fatih, the one who opens; Şakir, the one who gives thanks; Hafız, the one who guards. All these names have alif as their second letter, which is where the long "a" of the first syllable comes from. Asım (عاصم) follows the same pattern. This is also why they sound so modern: short, two syllables, with a clear stress.
| Name | Arabic spelling | Abjad | Meaning | Where in the Qur'an |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fatih | فاتح | 489 | Opener, conqueror; in the verse as the plural fatihin ("those who judge") | 7:89 |
| Galip | غالب | 1033 | Victorious, prevailing; in the verse "God prevails in His purpose" | 12:21 |
| Nasır | ناصر | 341 | Helper, supporter; in the verse the plural nasirin ("the best of helpers") | 3:150 |
| Şakir | شاكر | 521 | Grateful; the verse describes Abraham as grateful for God's favours | 16:121 |
| Hafız | حافظ | 989 | Guardian, keeper; also one who has memorised the Qur'an | 86:4 |
| Zakir | ذاكر | 921 | One who remembers God; in the verse the plural zakirin | 33:35 |
| Halis | خالص | 721 | Pure, unmixed, sincere; in the verse "pure devotion" | 39:3 |
| Kâmil | كامل | 91 | Complete, mature; in the verse feminine kamila ("ten complete days") | 2:196 |
| Saim | صائم | 141 | One who fasts; in the verse the plural sa'imin | 33:35 |
One match in this table stands out: Fatih (فاتح) and al-Fattah (فتاح), one of the Beautiful Names of God, consist of the same letters and both equal 489. Tradition sees a closeness between names that share a root and a value, but this is a sign to reflect on, not a verdict.

Sait, Cemil, Tayyip, Mansur and Hikmet have been in use for a long time, but their short form and clear meaning are bringing them back. Cemil appears in Sura Yusuf in Jacob's words on hearing painful news: "sabrun jamil", beautiful patience.
| Name | Arabic spelling | Abjad | Meaning | Where in the Qur'an |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sait | سعيد | 144 | Happy, blessed; the verse contrasts the wretched and the happy | 11:105 |
| Cemil | جميل | 83 | Beautiful; in the verse Jacob's words "sabrun jamil" (beautiful patience) | 12:18 |
| Tayyip | طيب | 21 | Pure, good, wholesome; the verse says to eat what is lawful and good | 2:168 |
| Mansur | منصور | 386 | One who is helped, granted victory | 17:33 |
| Hikmet | حكمت | 468 | Wisdom, deep understanding; the verse says whoever is given wisdom is given much good | 2:269 |
Mind the spelling: in Ottoman script Hikmet is written with an open ta as حكمت and equals 468. Written the Arabic way with a round ta (حكمة), the value drops to 73. One name, two spellings, two very different numbers. That is why the first step in any name analysis is to establish the correct spelling.
A short scenario: Eymen or Ensar?
The mother is Zeynep (زينب, 69), the father Ahmet (أحمد, 53). For their son they are torn between Eymen (101) and Ensar (342). Looking at the elements of the letters (according to the classical classification; some authors order them differently), the first impression is this: Zeynep's letters are mostly Air (plus one Water), Ahmet's are Fire and Earth. Eymen carries two Fire and two Air letters; Ensar adds one Earth letter (ر = 200) to these.
Does that mean Ensar suits the family better? Not yet. In the Abjad tradition letters do not weigh the same; a single Ra can carry most of a name's value. And a child's star chart (yıldızname) is derived from the sum of his own name and his mother's name, so the same name can point to another sign and element when the mother's name changes. The answer is not in the table but in the family's own calculation.
Four questions before you decide
- Do we know the meaning fully? Read the context of the verse too; with names like Asım, Fatih or Mansur the verse sometimes holds a nuance you would not expect.
- Which spelling is correct? The Abjad value depends on the spelling; agree on one spelling within the family.
- How does it sound with the surname and siblings' names? Harmony of sound is harmony too.
- How does it fit with the mother's and father's names? In the Abjad tradition this is the real question.
From the table to the report: where the name meets the family
The values above are each name's own number, but they do not tell you which one suits your son. If you have not settled on a name yet, the Baby Name Finder & Analysis report examines the parents' names letter by letter, draws the family element map, identifies the missing element and offers five name suggestions ranked by family compatibility; the top three are explained in detail. The report also shows, in a separate table, how the year's most popular boys' names fit your family, a useful comparison if you are weighing "modern" names.
If you already have a name in mind, say you are torn between Eymen and Ensar, the Baby Name Family Compatibility analysis measures that name's relationship with mother and father separately: mother-baby, father-baby and overall family scores, each person's Abjad value, element and star, and the family energy map in one report.
