2026 Modern Girl Names from the Quran and Their Meanings

Parents looking for a baby name in 2026 keep coming back to the same wish: "Something short and modern, but rooted in the Quran." Meeting all three at once is easier than it sounds. Many words in the Quran are just two syllables long, flow naturally and sound thoroughly contemporary. None of them is new, of course; they come from verses that have been recited for fourteen centuries.

Here "modern" is a measure of sound, not of fashion: names that are short, easy to say and sit comfortably next to a surname. You will find no popularity rankings or statistics below, because whether a name is right for your family depends on its meaning and its harmony within the family, not on a chart. The names are those used in Turkey and across the Muslim world.

How we chose these names

  • The word genuinely occurs in the Quran. Next to each name you will find one verse where the word appears, given as sura:verse. These are Quranic words, not the names of people. The only woman mentioned by name in the Quran is Maryam (Meryem); the names below are words for concepts, places or beautiful things.
  • Short and modern-sounding. Most have two syllables; long, heavy-sounding names were left out on purpose.
  • A beautiful meaning. We picked words whose context in the verse is positive or neutral.

Abjad values were calculated from the letters of the Arabic spelling using the standard great Abjad (ebced-i kebir): a doubled letter (shadda) is counted once, the article "al-" is left out, ة (ta marbuta) counts as 5 and a free-standing hamza (ء) counts as 0. A different spelling gives a different value.

Names grouped by sound and length

Rather than grouping by meaning, we sorted the names by how they sound. Say your surname out loud and try a few names from each group next to it; it is the quickest way to narrow the list.

1. Short names ending on an open vowel

Two syllables, opening or closing on an "a" sound, said in a single breath. They balance especially well with long surnames.

Duha is also the name of the 93rd sura, which opens with an oath by this bright time of day. Ala is the word for "blessings" in the refrain repeated throughout Sura al-Rahman: "Which, then, of your Lord's blessings will you deny?" It is rare in Turkey but common in the Arab world.

2. Names with a "-ra", "-na" or "-ya" rhythm

Names whose second syllable opens with a soft consonant and leaves a gentle wave in the ear. They flow well with short surnames.

3. Names that close softly on "-e"

Names whose last syllable ends on "e", with a finer, more graceful tone. Some look traditional, yet their short shape is bringing them back into favour.

Raziye is the word in the call at the end of Sura al-Fajr to the soul at peace: "Return to your Lord, well-pleased."

4. Names ending on a consonant

Names that close on a consonant, crisp and strong when spoken. If your surname ends in "a", this group balances the rhythm.

"Is this name in the Quran?" Four names that are often mislabelled

Some lists online tag names as "Quranic" when they are not. A few clarifications:

  • Hira (حراء, 209): the name of the cave where the first revelation came; the word "Hira" itself does not appear in the Quran. It is a lovely name, it just needs the right label.
  • Elif: the name of the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. It is pronounced in the letters that open some suras, such as "Alif Lam Mim", but "alif" is not written as a word.
  • Esra (إسراء, 262): Sura 17 is called al-Isra, and its first verse uses the verb "He took by night". The name comes from this root; the word appears as a verb, not in this exact form.
  • Ecrin: the word "ajr" (reward) occurs often in the Quran, for instance in Sura al-Shu'ara, where the prophets say "I ask you no reward for it". "Ecrin" grew out of the way this word is pronounced in recitation and became a popular name in Turkey.

Same number, different name: Sidre and Reyhan

Two names on the list share a curious coincidence: Sidre and Reyhan have the same Abjad value.

  • Sidre (سدرة): س 60 + د 4 + ر 200 + ة 5 = 269
  • Reyhan (ريحان): ر 200 + ي 10 + ح 8 + ا 1 + ن 50 = 269

The number is identical, but the letters are spread quite differently. In the Abjad tradition the letters are divided among the four elements (some authors use a different classification). By this classification, Sidre contains Water, Earth and Fire letters and no Air letter, while Reyhan has Earth, Air and Fire letters and no Water letter. Nisa and Ulya form a similar pair: both come to 111.

The lesson is simple: a name's Abjad value alone is not an analysis. Two names with the same number can create a completely different picture alongside the letters of the mother's and father's names. The real question is not "what does this name add up to?" but "what balance does this name strike with our family's letters?"

Three practical notes for choosing a short name

  1. Read it aloud with your surname. A two-syllable name next to a two-syllable surname can sound clipped; next to a longer surname it feels balanced.
  2. Settle the spelling early. For names like Ala, Aliye or Raziye, decide before registration whether you will use the circumflex (Âlâ, Âliye, Râziye).
  3. Learn the meaning in its verse. When your daughter one day asks where her name comes from, being able to show her the verse makes a lovely memory.

From a list to family harmony

Every name in this article is meaningful and grounded in the Quran. But no list can tell you which one suits your family. In the baby name reports, the mother's and father's names are studied letter by letter, the family's element map is drawn, and candidate names are weighed against it. Whether you already have a few names in mind or none at all, the next step can be to see your own family's chart.

Note: Abjad values and the classification of letters by element are a traditional framework of interpretation; they do not make definitive statements about a child's future. When choosing a name, a beautiful meaning and a name your family truly loves always come first.
