Most Popular Baby Boy Names in Azerbaijan 2025 and Their Meanings

In 2025 the name given most often to baby boys registered in Azerbaijan was Uğur: 1,721 babies. According to the Ministry of Justice, Uğur was also No. 1 in 2024. For a reader who knows Turkey, the rest of the list feels familiar and slightly foreign at once: Hüseyn, Əli, Yusif, Ömər, Murad... These are the Azerbaijani spellings of the names written Hüseyin, Ali, Yusuf, Ömer and Murat in Turkey. The Latin letters differ, but in Arabic script they are the same words, with the same Abjad values.

The ministry's annual lists give only the top 10 names with their counts, and the full-year figures we have cover 2024 and 2025. The comparison below is therefore limited to those two years.

The 10 most popular boy names in Azerbaijan in 2025

The counts are based on births registered across the whole country in calendar year 2025. The ministry counts every Latin spelling as a separate name: Hüseyn in the table, or Məhəmməd in the 2024 list, covers only babies registered with exactly that spelling; the same name registered in another spelling is not included. Abjad values are calculated from the name's established spelling in Arabic script.

Raul's leap. Among names in the top 10 in both years, the biggest rise belongs to Raul: from fifth to second, with 191 more babies given the name (1,110 → 1,301). The only other one of these names whose count rose is Ayxan (708 → 737). Raul's roots lie outside the Turkic and Arab worlds: it is the Portuguese, Italian and Romanian form of the Germanic Radulf.

Miran arrives. Miran entered the list straight at sixth place with 855 babies. It was not in the 2024 top 10; that year the tenth name stood at 694. The sources give no clear meaning for the name as used in Azerbaijan.

No change at the top. 111 fewer babies were named Uğur (1,832 → 1,721), yet its lead over second place is still 420; in 2024 the gap was 443.

Hüseyn and Əli swap places. In 2024 Əli was ahead by just 5 babies (1,389 against 1,384). In 2025 the order reversed: Hüseyn third with 1,164, Əli fourth with 1,151.

Names that slipped. Məhəmməd, eighth in 2024, is not in the 2025 top 10, and Murad fell from seventh to tenth. Tunar climbed one place even though its count fell by just 1 (694 → 693): Murad fell below it and Məhəmməd left the top 10.

One name on both sides of the border

The Azerbaijani Latin alphabet has letters such as ə and x that Turkish lacks, and names of Arabic origin are pronounced a little differently in the two countries. Abjad, however, works with Arabic letters, so these Latin differences do not change the number. The table below shows the names from the 2024 and 2025 lists that are also used in Turkey, in both spellings.

Azerbaijani spellingTurkish spellingArabic spellingAbjad2025 rank
UğurUğurأوغور1213#1
HüseynHüseyinحسين128#3
ƏliAliعلي110#4

MuradMuratمراد245#10
MəhəmmədMuhammed / Mehmetمحمد92— (2024: #8)
AyxanAyhanأيخان / أيهان662 / 67#8

Murad and Murat make a neat example: in Turkish the final d hardens to t, while the Arabic spelling is مراد in both cases (245). Məhəmməd is the Azerbaijani spelling of the name known in Turkey as Muhammed and Mehmet; all three are محمد in Arabic, with a value of 92.

Two exceptions: Uğur and Ayxan

Uğur is not an Arabic word but a Turkish one (meaning good fortune, an auspicious sign). It therefore has no classical Arabic spelling; on our site the "hard" ğ is written with غ: أوغور. The result is the highest value on the list, 1213, of which 1000 comes from غ alone.

Ayxan is the same name as Turkish Ayhan (ay "moon" + khan). But the x sound of the Azerbaijani spelling is rendered in Arabic with خ (600): أيخان = 662. The Arabic press, writing the Turkish form Ayhan, uses أيهان (67). A single letter changes the value by 595. Neither spelling is "more auspicious" than the other; but the first thing to settle in any analysis is which spelling is used.

The 2025 list through Abjad

  • First letters: By the classical classification used in our reports (some authors classify differently), four names begin with a Fire letter (Uğur, Miran, Ayxan, Murad), four with an Earth letter (Raul, Hüseyn, Əli, Ömər) and two with an Air letter (Yusif, Tunar). None begins with a Water letter.
  • Highest and lowest: Uğur has the highest value at 1213, Əli the lowest at 110: ع (70) + ل (30) + ي (10).
  • From Hasan to Hüseyn: Hüseyn is the diminutive of Hasan. Adding one ي (10) to حسن (118) gives حسين (128); the ten-point difference comes from a single letter.
  • A prophet named in the Qur'an: Yusif's Arabic form يوسف (156) is the name of the Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), who is named in the Qur'an; the 12th sura bears his name.

A name's Abjad value on its own is not an analysis. In the Abjad tradition the real question is how that number forms a whole with the mother's and father's names. A child's yıldızname sign is also calculated together with the mother's name, so the same name Hüseyn can point to a different sign and element for the children of different mothers.

Quick questions

Hüseyn or Hüseyin: does it matter for Abjad? No. Both are حسين in Arabic, value 128. The difference only shows up in civil registration and in the statistics.

Why only 10 names? The year-end lists released by the ministry contain the top 10; no longer official ranking is published. We say nothing about places 11 and below.

Is the No. 1 name "luckier"? No. A ranking only shows how many families chose a name; in the Abjad tradition a name's value has nothing to do with its popularity.

Uğur, Yusif, Ömər or Ayxan... Whether the name you have in mind comes from Baku or Istanbul, seeing it alongside your family's names can add a new dimension to your decision.

Source: Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan, newborn first-name statistics based on birth registrations (the "Azərbaycan adları barədə məlumat" e-service and the ministry's year-end announcements: 31 December 2024 for 2024, January 2026 for 2025; top 10 names). The figures are taken from Azerbaijani press reports quoting the ministry's data; because the 2024 list was published on 31 December, the last few days of that year may be missing.

Note: the ministry counts every Latin spelling separately. Name meanings are based on common dictionary information; Arabic spellings may vary by source. Abjad values and element interpretations are for information, based on the Abjad tradition; they imply no certainty or guarantee.
