Most Popular Baby Girl Names in France 2025 (INSEE) and Their Meanings
Louise was once again the name given to the most baby girls born in France in 2025: 3,070 of them. Jade (2,925) and Ambre (2,805) follow, so the top three are exactly as in 2024. The movement is a little lower down: Alma rose to 4th, Adèle entered the top 10 and Nour climbed from 25th to 16th.
Below are the top 30 girls' names from INSEE, France's national statistics institute, with meaning, origin, Arabic spelling and Abjad value. First, a short Q&A on how to read the numbers.
Four questions before reading the list
What is being counted? Births registered in France, the whole country including Mayotte. Only the first given name counts; middle names are ignored.
Why does every number end in 0 or 5? INSEE rounds the counts to the nearest multiple of 5, while the ranks are computed from the exact counts. That is why Olivia and Julia share the same figure (1,685) yet sit 19th and 20th, and why Inaya shows 1,990 in both years while slipping from 12th to 14th.
Are Julia and Giulia the same name? Not for INSEE: every spelling is counted separately. Julia is 20th, Giulia 24th. In Arabic, though, both are written جوليا and have the same Abjad value: 50.
How far back do we look? Our data covers 2021–2025, so "first time" here means within those five years.
Five years at the top
| Year | 1st place (babies) | 2nd place (babies) |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Jade (3,800) | Louise (3,765) |
| 2022 | Louise (3,415) | Jade (3,415) |
| 2023 | Louise (3,175) | Ambre (3,170) |
| 2024 | Louise (3,130) | Jade (3,060) |
| 2025 | Louise (3,070) | Jade (2,925) |
Louise has been first for four years, but slightly fewer babies receive the name each year: 3,765 in 2021, 3,070 in 2025. In 2022 Louise and Jade had the same rounded count (3,415); the exact counts decided the order. In 2025 the gap is 145 babies.

What changed from 2024 to 2025
- Biggest jump among the 2025 top 30: Esmée, from 41st to 27th, with 495 more babies given the name (1,530 in total).
- Nour gained 9 places, Adèle and Iris 6 each. Adèle is now in the top 10.
- Biggest fall among the top 30: Mia, from 13th to 21st; 280 fewer babies were given the name.
- In numbers, the largest drop within the top 30 was Alba's: 300 fewer babies, down from 4th to 5th.
- New in the top 30: Esmée and Sofia (from 33rd to 29th). Left the top 30: Léna (31st) and Luna (33rd), both still in the top 100.
Climbing step by step
A single year can mislead. Over five years, some rises look remarkably steady:
| Name | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alma | 55 | 16 | 7 | 6 | 4 |
| Adèle | 29 | 26 | 22 | 15 | 9 |
| Nour | 43 | 35 | 31 | 25 | 16 |
| Iris | 18 | 18 | 18 | 17 | 11 |
| Esmée | outside top 100 | outside top 100 | 65 | 41 | 27 |
Alma's path stands out: from 55th to 4th between 2021 and 2025. Nour has moved up every year. Esmée was not in the top 100 at all in 2021 or 2022.
Names of Arabic origin in the list
Three names in the top 30 are of Arabic origin: Inaya (عناية, "care, attention"), Nour (نور, "light") and Lina (لينا, Arabic "tender, gentle"). The word nur occurs in the Qur'an, and a sura, an-Nur, is named after it.
A quieter example is Ambre: French for amber, from the Arabic عنبر ('anbar). Further down the list are Alya (32nd), Jannah (66th, جنة, "paradise, garden"), Maryam (79th) and Mariam (86th). The last two are the same name, Maryam (Mary), the only woman named in the Qur'an. Because INSEE counts each spelling separately, each appears lower than the name as a whole would; in Arabic both are مريم, value 290.

We compute the Abjad value as the sum of the letters in the name's established Arabic spelling: no article ال, no doubling for shadda, a hamza counted by the letter that carries it. French names are usually written in Arabic by sound; the table uses the common forms.
- First letters of the top 10: 6 names begin with a Fire letter (Ambre, Alma, Alba, Emma, Adèle, Alice, all with alif), 3 with an Earth letter (Louise ل, Rose and Romy ر) and 1 with a Water letter (Jade ج). None starts with an Air letter. This is because names beginning with a vowel are written with alif in Arabic; it gives no name an advantage. (Some authors classify the letters' elements differently.)
- Highest value: Charlie, 941, because of ت (400) and ش (300) in تشارلي. Next comes Victoire, 717.
- Lowest value: Jade, 18, then Zoé, 23.
- Shared values: Romy and Nour, 256; Emma and Anna, 52; Julia and Giulia, 50.
Change the spelling and the value changes. Ambre written أمبر gives 243, but 322 as its root عنبر. Jade gives 18 as جادي and 8 as جاد; Agathe 515 as أجاثي and 1403 as أغاتا. No spelling is "luckier" than another, but this is why our reports always begin by fixing the spelling of the child's and the parents' names.
That is where the real question starts. Romy and Nour carry the same number, yet they do not sit the same way in the same family. In the Abjad tradition, what matters is not a single figure but how the letters and elements of the baby's name relate to the mother's and father's names. For the star chart (yıldızname) sign, the baby's name is calculated together with the mother's name.
A final word
The list shows what French families chose in 2025, not what suits yours. Read the meaning in the table, fix the spelling with care, and weigh harmony together with your family's names.

Louise, Alma or Nour?
Romy and Nour share an Abjad value, yet they do not fit every family in the same way. The Baby Name Family Compatibility report sets the name you have in mind beside the parents' names: Abjad values, elements, planets and mother-baby, father-baby and whole-family harmony scores.
