What Does Utarid (Mercury) Mean in the Star Chart (Yıldızname)? The Scribe of the Sky
Picture the courtyard of an old caravanserai. A caravan has just arrived: one man tallies the goods, another hands out the letters, a third turns one merchant's offer into the other merchant's language. Three different jobs, yet tradition counts all three as children of the same star: Utarid. In the Yıldızname, Utarid, the classical name for Mercury, is the star of words and numbers, of news and bargaining. What sets it apart from the other planets is not a single subject but an attitude: adaptation.
The Scribe of the Sky: What Utarid Stands For
Ottoman literature calls Utarid kâtib-i felek, "the scribe of the sky": the clerk of the heavenly council who keeps its records, puts its decisions into writing and carries its messages. Classical sources gather its domain under a few headings:
- Word: speech, eloquence, translation, negotiation.
- Pen: writing, records, correspondence, contracts, clerical work.
- Calculation: arithmetic, accounting, weights and measures.
- Trade: buying and selling, brokerage, bargaining, goods and news on the road.
- Learning: teaching, books, circles of study.
Its behaviour in the sky fits the title. After the Moon, Mercury is the fastest-moving of the seven classical planets, and it never strays far from the Sun; it shows itself only briefly, just before dawn or just after sunset. It is like an envoy who never leaves the sovereign's side, carrying word back and forth. That is why the Greeks paired it with Hermes the messenger, and why some medieval Muslim authors identified Hermes, regarded as a father of the sciences, with the Prophet Idris.
Mümtezic: The Star That Takes On Its Companion's Colour
Tradition sorts the seven planets by fortune and difficulty. Jupiter is the greater fortune (sa'd-ı ekber), Venus the lesser fortune (sa'd-ı asgar); Saturn is the greater malefic (nahs-ı ekber), Mars the lesser malefic (nahs-ı asgar). The Sun and Moon stand apart as the "neyyireyn", the two lights. Mercury fits none of these boxes. Tradition calls it mümtezic, "the one that blends": beside a fortunate star it reflects fortune, beside a difficult one it reflects difficulty.
This does not make Mercury colourless. Think of a good interpreter: they have their own voice, yet the words they carry take on the tone of whoever spoke them. Good news sounds even better in their mouth; hard news is passed on as it is. That is why Star Chart readings never look at Mercury alone, but at the letters and stars it arrives with.
One Pen, Two Inks: Mercury in Gemini and in Virgo
Mercury rules two signs: Gemini from the air triplicity (remainder 3 in the Yıldızname) and Virgo from the earth triplicity (remainder 6). Same planet, different element: one pen writing in two inks. The comparison below sets the traditional tendencies side by side:
| Theme | Mercury in Gemini (air) | Mercury in Virgo (earth) |
|---|---|---|
| Direction of the mind | Flows outward, makes connections | Turns inward, sifts |
| Words | Speaks, explains, persuades | Writes, corrects, puts on record |
| Calculation | Quick estimate, practical shortcut | Line by line, double-checked figures |
| Trade | Bargaining, brokering, new customers | Bookkeeping, stock, quality |
| Learning | Broad and versatile | Deep and applied |
| As a messenger | First to hear the news and spread it | Verifies the news and files it |
| Shadow | Scattered attention, unfinished tasks | Over-precision, fault-finding |
In short, Mercury in Gemini writes the letter and Mercury in Virgo proofreads it. Both serve the same star: one spreads the word, the other makes it sound.
The Mercurial Temperament: Light and Shadow
Tradition describes a temperament in which Mercury dominates roughly as follows.
Light
- A gift for language and expression; quick to pick up the idiom of any circle.
- Ease with numbers; seeing the sum before anyone else at the bargaining table.
- Rapid adjustment to new places, new people, new work.
- Mediation: explaining each side's concern to the other.
- Endless curiosity and an appetite for learning.
Shadow
- The shadow of a star that borrows its colour is losing its own: changing opinions to suit the room.
- More words than deeds; promises that slip the mind.
- Cleverness sliding into cunning. In tradition, Mercury joined with a difficult star is also read as a sign of false words and trickery.
- A mind that forgets to stop, trying to think of everything at once.
Tradition's advice is simple: balance Mercury's speed with faithfulness. Promise little and keep it, never sign without reading, stay true to your source when passing knowledge on.
Does Mercury Rule Your Name?
Reading this, the obvious question is: is this me? In the Yıldızname tradition, a person's ruling star is not guessed or taken from a birthday; it is drawn from the Abjad values of your own name and your mother's name. The sign alone does not have the final word; the letters of the name and the total itself can change the picture. So someone whose sign comes out as Gemini or Virgo may lean towards another star, while someone of a completely different sign may carry Mercury's traces.
On the first page of the Destiny Analysis with Mother's Name report, a Ruling Star box sits beside your Abjad total and main element. Then every letter of your name is opened up with its Abjad value, its secret and its temperament, and the destiny map follows with general character, temperament and nature, and career and abilities. That page shows whether your pen belongs to Mercury.
Is your pen Mercury's?
Your ruling star comes from your own name and your mother's name. The Destiny Analysis with Mother's Name presents your Abjad total, main element, Ruling Star and a letter-by-letter hurufat table, together with readings on character and abilities.
Destiny Analysis with Mother's Name — Get My AnalysisWednesday: Why the Day of Contracts and Letters?
In the classical order each day belongs to a planet, and Wednesday is Mercury's. That is why tradition recommends Wednesday for correspondence, contracts, shopping, settling accounts and starting a course of study. But the day is only half the story; its hours are also shared out among the planets in turn.
A small worked example: a Wednesday signature
Imagine a shopkeeper about to sign an annual contract with a supplier and looking for a traditionally fitting time. The calculation runs like this:
- The time between sunrise and sunset in that city is divided by 12. If daylight lasts 10 hours 48 minutes, for example, one day-hour is 54 minutes.
- The 1st hour after sunrise belongs to the lord of the day, Mercury.
- The following hours run in Chaldean order: 2nd Moon, 3rd Saturn, 4th Jupiter, 5th Mars, 6th Sun, 7th Venus, and the 8th is Mercury again. Daylight ends with 9th Moon, 10th Saturn, 11th Jupiter, 12th Mars.
- With the 54-minute hour of our example, the 8th hour begins 6 hours 18 minutes after sunrise and ends 7 hours 12 minutes after sunrise.
- After sunset the night hours continue in the same order; the 3rd and 10th hours of the night following Wednesday also belong to Mercury.
This gives the traditional ideal: Mercury's hour on Mercury's day, the hour of the pen on the day of the pen. Placing the signature in the first hour of the morning or in the 8th hour of the afternoon rests on this logic. Because sunrise and sunset change with city and date, the hours are recalculated each time from that day's data.
This table is the same for everyone. The fine point is personal: Mercury's hour may open a door for a name in harmony with Mercury, yet be an ordinary hour for someone ruled by another star. Tradition encourages seeking the right moment, but what truly protects a contract is carefully read clauses and a word that is kept.
Mercury's Place in Your Year
Mercury's business, letters, agreements, trade and new learning, does not flow equally well in every part of the year. Starting from your name, your mother's name and your date of birth, the Annual Star Chart Forecast brings together the ruler and element of the year, a general assessment, outlooks for January–March, April–June, July–September and October–December, and the critical months that call for attention. If you are wondering where in the year to place an important signature or a new beginning, the map of your own year is a good place to start.
This article shares general knowledge from the Abjad and Star Chart tradition; it is not a definitive judgement, prediction or guarantee. Planetary days and hours are a traditional approach to timing and do not replace professional advice on legal, financial or health matters.
